WATCH: The Life of Objects

An exhibition of the unexpected at The John Rylands Library
Libraries have long been guardians of the written word. Yet at The John Rylands Library, words are only part of the picture – as its latest exhibition illustrates.
The Life of Objects is an exhibition of the unexpected. Instead of books and manuscripts, it showcases some of the more unusual objects in our collection. And although humble – the objects range from a beaded bag to a battered pair of baby shoes – each of these objects has its own tale to tell.
Here Anne Anderton, Collection and Research Support Assistant, tells why she has a soft spot for American poet Walt Whitman, who has a surprising link to her hometown Bolton and whose manuscript collections feature in the exhibition:
The Life of Objects is free and open daily from Thursday, 16 March and runs until Sunday, 27 August.
