Manchester Postgraduate student selected for Panufnik Composers Scheme
22 Feb 2017
Music PhD student Emma Wilde has been selected to take part in the highly prestigious London Symphony Orchestra's Panufnik Composers Scheme
The Panufnik Composers Scheme is an exciting initiative from the London Symphony Orchestra offering six emerging composers each year the opportunity to write for a world-class symphony orchestra. It has been devised by the Orchestra in association with Lady Panufnik in memory of her late husband, the composer Sir Andrzej Panufnik, and is generously supported by Lady Hamlyn and the Helen Hamlyn Trust.
Under the guidance of renowned composer Colin Matthews, the scheme enables composers to experiment over time and develop their orchestral writing skills. Composers form collaborative musical relationships with LSO players as well as having their compositions put under the microscope by the LSO and François-Xavier Roth in a public workshop rehearsal – a major learning curve.
Emma commented: "I am really pleased to have been selected to participate in such a prestigious scheme. To compose a piece for a world class orchestra like the LSO is an extremely rare and valuable opportunity for a composer and I am looking forward to being able to develop my orchestral writing skills throughout the coming year."
Prof Camden Reeves, Head of Music said: "Everyone within the Music Department at Manchester is delighted for Emma. It’s extremely exciting that one of our research composers has been recognised for their wonderful work. Emma is in good company, as previous participants include Manchester Music alumni Emily Howard and Jack Sheen. It shows what a talented community of composers we have at Manchester."
