After tackling sex, climate change and homelessness the award winning Contact Young Company take on cancer

There is a Light: BRIGHTLIGHT - Contact Young Company (CYC) in collaboration with BRIGHTLIGHT.

Wednesday, 8 March – Friday, 10 March (7.30pm)

After tackling sex, climate change and homelessness the award winning Contact Young Company take on cancer. Directed by award winning artist Adura Onashile (HeLa; Expensive Sh*t), There is a Light: BRIGHTLIGHT will premiere at Contact, commissioned as part of SICK! Festival before embarking on two national tours.

Made possible by support from the Wellcome Trust, the performance takes direct inspiration from BRIGHTLIGHT, a two million pound study funded by the National Institute for Health Research that seeks specialist services for teenagers and young adults with cancer. BRIGHTLIGHT is developed by young people for young people and aims to make living with the illness more bearable.

Brian Lobel (A Pacifist's Guide to the War on Cancer with Bryony Kimmings and Tom Parkinson, BALL & Other Funny Stories About Cancer) has facilitated workshops with CYC alongside four young performers with direct experience of cancer care in the creation of the performance. These sessions have challenged the cast to investigate the subject in an open and inquisitive way.

Offering a critical and provocative perspective of how we support young people with cancer in an increasingly stretched Health Service, There is a Light: BRIGHTLIGHT has been created with the help of researchers, clinicians and patients.

“After over a decade of telling my own story, it's an absolute honour to work alongside young people with and without personal histories of cancer to tell theirs.”
