SciBar January: How small can you get? Entering and defining the nanoworld

Professor Paul O’Brien, School of Materials, will aim to explain the current interest in what might best be described as ‘Things Nano’
The talk, on Monday, 30 January (5.30-7pm) in The Lass O’Gowrie, 36 Charles Street, Manchester, M1 7DB, is for anyone interested in the area, but aspects of the lecture will be technical.
The lecture will begin by looking at the origins and definitions of nano-science and –technology. Definitions of the so-called ‘Bottom-up’ and ‘Top-down’ approaches will be discussed. Examples of nanosyntheis will be presented as will ideas influencing our perceptions of the area and the potential importance of technologies based on nanodimensional objects.
The talk will last around 45 minutes with a question and answer session to close, followed by the chance for further discussion while enjoying a few drinks in the cosy setting of the Lass O’Gowrie pub. No scientific background needed, just turn up and join in!
