New Year Staff Quiz supports scholarships at Manchester
16 Jan 2017
Last week, the Students’ Union Bar played host to another successful Staff Quiz
On a very cold January evening, despite sleet and snow, 18 quiz teams battled it out for some great prizes, including vouchers for the Union Bar and Old Abbey Taphouse.
Most importantly, the quiz raised money to support students from disadvantaged backgrounds studying at Manchester. Entry fees and donations in cash buckets produced a total of £176.94 which will be split between supporting Undergraduate Access Scholarships and students on the Equity & Merit Programme.
Undergraduate Access Scholarships support students who complete the Manchester Access Programme, and come from areas of Greater Manchester where there is traditionally little progression to Higher Education. You can watch a video about Scott, an Undergraduate Access Student below:
Equity & Merit Scholarships support students from Rwanda, Uganda and Tanzania to study for a Master’s at Manchester which is not available in their home country. These students take the skills and knowledge they learn here back home to help make a difference to the challenges facing their country. You can watch Felix’s story about the impact his place on the Equity & Merit Programme will have in Uganda below:
Both of these scholarships are entirely funded by donations to the University. Every level of gift, from cash in a bucket at a Staff Quiz, to regular direct debits, makes an enormous difference to students like Scott and Felix.
Many of the teams who took part had been on the waiting list for the jam-packed Summer Staff Quiz. Feedback from those who attended suggests that again, staff members enjoyed coming together for a fun activity and playing against teams from other areas of the University.
The next Staff Quiz will take place during the students’ summer break – hope to see you there!
