Registration for the University's annual Sexuality Summer School opens on 1 March 2017

The registration cost is £130, including the price of tickets for the public events. Only 40 places are available, so please book early to avoid disappointment!

The University’s annual Sexuality Summer School gives postgraduate researchers the opportunity to come together with academics, performers and activists to discuss contemporary debates in queer and feminist sexuality studies, with an emphasis on an interdisciplinary approach to culture.

Taking place from 22 to 26 May 2017 in SALC Graduate School, Ellen Wilkinson Building, the Summer School comprises a week of workshops and seminars, alongside a series of public events held in key cultural institutions in Manchester. These public events include film screenings, performances and lectures.

This year’s theme, ‘Why Be Normal?’, invites discussion of norms, normativities and the history of the normal in relation to sexuality studies and beyond.

Speakers include:

  • Robyn Wiegman (Professor of Literature, Duke)
  • Clare Hemmings (Professor of Feminist Theory, LSE)
  • Laura Doan (Professor of Cultural History, Manchester)
  • Dr Nina Wakeford (Artist and Sociologist, Goldsmiths)
  • Dr Brian Lobel, artist and performer (Chichester, co-author The Pacifist’s Guide to the War on Cancer)
  • Liz Carr, international disability rights activist, presenter and actor (BBC series Silent Witness
  • Holly Hughes (performance artist and Professor of Theatre and Drama, STAMPS, Michigan)
