Manchester to help lead future manufacturing expertise in UK

Researchers at the University are to play a key role in developing future manufacturing expertise in support of the UK economy, following a multi-million pound funding boost from Government

Jo Johnson, Minister of State for Universities, Science, Research and Innovation, announced the funding as part of a pledge to create new research hubs in support of future manufacturing. These hubs aim to address major long-term challenges facing the UK's manufacturing industries - and capture opportunities from emerging research.

In the announcement, the University has been named as a key partner in the programme. The University will be supporting:

  • Manufacture using Advanced Powder Processes (MAPP) research hub
  • Future Compound Semiconductor Manufacturing Hub
  • Future Composites Manufacturing Hub
  • Future Manufacturing Hub in Targeted Healthcare.

Investment of £10 million from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPRSC), together with £7 million from the 17 industry and HVMC partners, will help support the Manufacture using Advanced Powder Processes (MAPP) research hub (see Fact Box 1).

A further £10 million of funding will support the EPSRC Manufacturing Hub in Future Compound Semiconductors and will work closely with academic partners, including the University and the Compound Semiconductor Centre (see Fact Box 2).
