Researcher tells Radio 4 listeners that hairdressers can inform and enhance the provision of care
A University academic has told BBC Radio 4 listeners how hairdressers can inform and enhance the provision of care for dementia sufferers.
Research associate Sarah Campbell, from the School of Health Sciences, revealed the importance of salon chat and human touch to women and men who struggled to recall the past, on the BBC radio station’s Thinking Allowed programme.
She told presenter Laurie Taylor that mobile hairdressers working in care homes who set up mini salons, complete with hooded hair dryers, can evoke familiarity and fond memories for their elderly clients.
Her co-written Sociology of Health and Illness paper argues that as an alternative form of body work, much can be learned from hairdressing that can inform and enhance the provision of dementia care.
