The Festival will take place on 18 October 2016, in and around Academy 1. The festival brings together two existing events; the Volunteering Fair and JustFest. The festival is part of the University’s Ethical Grand Challenges programme and launches a year of Social Justice themed activity under the banner JustFest Presents. This will include the JustFest short film competition and a range of new pop- up and fringe events throughout the year.
Inside Academy 1 will be an exhibition space giving students the chance to meet charities and not-for-profit organisations, to network and learn about volunteering opportunities. Outside, the Main Stage will feature musical performances by Akala’s Hip Hop Shakespeare Company, Stone Flowers, Galivantes. Between performances there will be soapbox style talks by Black Lives Matter, Stop The Traffik and many more. There will also be a tent curated by the Students' Union (SU) and a selection of food stalls by Levenshulme Market.
Doors open at 11.30am and close at 4pm. In the evening, the SU will be holding a themed event looking at social justice and opportunities to get involved including a workshop by Mustard Tree Drama Group.
All students are welcome to attend this free festival. Following on from the Sustainability Challenge, this is the perfect opportunity for new 1st years to learn about and secure opportunities for volunteering and work towards achieving the Manchester Leadership Award.
