Putting the Staff Survey into action
27 Sep 2016
In the year since the results of the 2015 Staff Survey were published, Staff Learning and Development have been working on a number of initiatives to deliver more effective leadership and management
In December 2015, the Staff Survey action plan was agreed with four University wide themes:
- Workloads and life balance
- Managing change
- Communication
- Effective leadership and management
The first three themes are being managed by individual Faculties and the PSS, Library, and Cultural Institutions, as the issues identified by the survey differed greatly across the range of local areas and so required locally tailored solutions.
The fourth theme has been facilitated by Staff Learning and Development with a triple focus on the following aspects of leadership and management:
- Performance and Development Review (P&DR);
- Quality of newly appointed inexperienced managers and experienced managers;
- Managing performance.
So, what’s been happening? Here's an update on how work is progressing on turning your views into action for this important theme:
Performance and Development Review
Training in the new University Performance and Development Review process has already been delivered to the Professional Support Services (PSS) reviewers. The next step is to agree a timescale for roll-out to Academic colleagues.
Quality of managers
- Newly appointed inexperienced managers
It is proposed that newly appointed inexperienced managers will be offered the opportunity of participating in a management development programme within three months of taking up an appointment. The design and delivery of this proposal is currently being considered. Guidance is being prepared to help individuals, line managers and HR to identify learning and development needs.
- Experienced managers
Staff Learning and Development is producing guidance to help experienced managers to identify opportunities to meet their continuing professional development needs.
Managing performance
Staff Learning and Development Partners will liaise with their HR Partners to take this theme forward.
