06 Sep 2016
The University has been shortlisted in three categories of the Times Higher Education (THE) Awards 2016
The categories are as follows:
- Business School of the Year
- Outstanding Research Supervisor of the Year
- Outstanding Digital Innovation in Teaching or Research
Alliance MBS has been shortlisted in the Business School of the Year category. This award will go to the business school demonstrating the most outstanding overall performance during the 2014-15 academic year.
Alys Young, Professor of Social Work Education and Research, has been shortlisted for the Outstanding Research Supervisor of the Year. Based in the Division of Nursing, Midwifery and Social Work in the Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health, Alys is a leading international researcher whose work focuses on deaf people who use a signed language and social work.
Just six nominations have been shortlisted in this category; and the award will be given to the individual who has created the most supportive, stimulating and inspirational research environment for PhD or professional doctoral students.
Current and former students Rachel Belk, Sofia Dedotsi, Emma Ferguson-Coleman and Jane Russell nominated Professor Young and commented:
"We are all extremely proud and delighted that Professor Young has been shortlisted for this fantastic award. This recognition of her unwavering support for under-recognised areas of research and our individual research studies is much deserved.”
And Dr Patrick O'Malley from the School of Chemistry has been shortlisted for Outstanding Digital Innovation in Teaching or Research. Dr O'Malley uses video conferencing and student response software to conduct interactive online seminars with international students.
The winners will be announced at a prestigious awards ceremony in London on 24 November attended by politicians, senior sector figures, and academic and professional university staff from all corners of the UK.
