WATCH: Global problems, Manchester solutions at ESOF

25 Jul 2016

Showcasing our research beacons – cancer and industrial biotechnology

Manchester skyline

The University is showcasing its five research beacons at the EuroScience Open Forum (ESOF), Europe’s greatest scientific gathering, which celebrates Manchester’s role as European City of Science 2016.

The research beacons – cancer, industrial biotechnology, advanced materials, energy and addressing global inequalities – are examples of pioneering discoveries, interdisciplinary collaboration and cross-sector partnerships that are tackling some of the biggest questions facing the planet.

In short: global problems, Manchester solutions.

Throughout ESOF, the University will be showing films about each of our beacons.

Today you can see two: cancer and industrial biotechnology.

Cancer

One in two of us will be diagnosed with some form of cancer during our lifetime. Cancer may be one illness, but there are over 200 types – and a diagnosis affects whole families. Our approach to cancer research spans the full spectrum of combating the disease.

Industrial biotechnology

Fossil fuels have been the primary energy source for society since the Industrial Revolution, providing the raw material for the manufacture of many everyday products such as pharmaceuticals, food and drink, plastics and personal care.  But our dependency cannot continue. Here at the University, we are at the forefront of a bio-industrial revolution.
