Join the Lunchtime Strollers and feel better!
The University’s Walking for Health group, Lunchtime Strollers, started in 2010 to provide a number of regular, short, free walks for staff, students and our local community.
The walks are led by trained volunteers and are aimed at people who need or want to improve their health and wellbeing by becoming more active.
Betty-Ann Bristow-Castle has been volunteering as the Scheme Co-ordinator for six years in addition to her role as a Communications and Events Officer in the Humanitarian Conflict Response Unit.
She said: “Most of our walkers report an increased sense of wellbeing by getting out of the office for half an hour’s fresh air, a change of scenery and conversation with their new walking friends.”
There are now five active walk leaders at north and south campus leading walks at least three times a week for 30-60 minutes duration. Popular routes include Victoria Baths, Whitworth Art Gallery and park, Pankhurst Museum, Little Ireland, Rochdale Canal, Sackville Gardens, Hulme Community Garden Centre and many other local parks and green spaces, points of historical or horticultural interest.
The Lunchtime Strollers were featured in the recent Manchester Walking Festival month which generated additional interest in the group from staff and the general public.
Everyone is welcome whether you can attend once a week or once a month. All you need is sensible footwear.
