Manchester PhD team scoops grand prize in regional consulting competition

BioVision Consulting have won £1,000 at the Northern Biotech Consulting Case Competition

Last weekend, the Northwest Biotech Initiative invited graduate students and professionals from across the region to come together and learn about consulting in the biotech sector.

On Saturday, 25 June 2016k, the Northwest Biotech Initiative held its first Northern Biotech Consulting Case Competition at University Place, which saw graduate students and professionals from across the region come together to learn about consulting in the biotech sector. Seven teams from Manchester and Sheffield competed for the £1,000 grand prize, which was awarded to a team of three PhD students from the Institute of Inflammation and Repair at The University of Manchester.

Teammates James Gubbins, Yein Nam and Melissa Vincent formed BioVision Consulting and presented the winning case solution as chosen by a panel of expert judges consisting of Dr Nick Proctor (Director, Adelphi Access), Dr Parvez Hakim (Associate Director, Navigant Consulting), Rupert Wingate-Saul (Investment Director, AXM Venture Capital) and Professor Paul Townsend (Associate Dean for Business Engagement, The University of Manchester).

The full-day event also included guest speaker presentations focusing on careers in consulting, the future of the pharmaceutical industry, and the local biotech landscape, as well as mentoring sessions with a diverse group of consulting and business professionals. It was sponsored by Adelphi Group, The Manchester Enterprise Centre and Navigant Consulting.

First Place

Second Place

  • Switch Consultancy (The University of Sheffield): James Lambert (Animal and Plant Sciences), Hannah Murray (Materials Science and Engineering), Hannah Sewell (Animal and Plant Sciences), Ben Ward (Infection, Immunity and Cardiovascular Disease), Giannis Xanthis (Infection, Immunity and Cardiovascular Disease).

Third Place

  • Lyra Consulting (The University of Manchester): Amy Boyers Laura Hutchinson, Alice Spadea (Experimental Oncology Group, Manchester Pharmacy School).
