Support the John Dalton 250th Anniversary Sportive
01 Jul 2016
A team of staff and students from the University’s Dalton Nuclear Institute and Dalton Cumbrian Facility will be cycling 143 miles from Cumbria to Manchester on 7-8July
The purpose of their marathon ride is to celebrate the life and achievements of John Dalton and raise money for the Stroke Association.
The Dalton Anniversary Sportive marks the 250th anniversary of the birth of Dalton Nuclear Institute’s eponym John Dalton, pioneer of modern atomic theory. The route starts at Dalton Cumbrian Facility and finishes at Dalton Nuclear Institute, tracing Dalton’s own journey from his upbringing and education in West Cumbria to his residency and remarkable research achievements in Manchester, via his birthplace and the schools at which he taught at Pardshaw and Kendal.
The team are fundraising for the Stroke Association because John Dalton continued his research despite suffering from strokes during his later years. Stroke is a condition that affects many families from every walk of life, and is a cause important to all of them.
Their objectives are:
- to raise funds for the Stroke Association;
- to celebrate the life and achievements of John Dalton, founder of modern atomic theory;
- to highlight the research activities of The University of Manchester’s Dalton Nuclear Institute;
- to strengthen the team, build relationships, develop skills, and focus on health and wellbeing.
Please consider donating. The team are aiming to raise £1000 and every little helps.
