Free film festival explores impact of art and activism in areas of conflict

Multi-award winning University initiative In Place of War present CREATE Film Festival (4 June – 10 July) in Manchester
Co-curated with local communities in the city, In Place of War has worked in partnership with Film Hub NWC, part of the BFI Film Audience Network, to put together a film festival unlike any other. Taking place across Manchester, the event combines a great mix of emerging new talent and established filmmakers.
Based around four themes - Hip Hop, Dr Congo, Women and Kurdistan - the festival features screenings of 12 films, both short and feature length. At some screenings, there'll also be the chance for discussion, story sharing, director Q&As, live music and food. Best of all, each and every one of the CREATE Film Festival events are free to attend.
Event highlights include:
- a women-only screening of The Trials of Spring by Gini Reticker, which offers the audience the chance to follow the journey of three Egyptian women setting out on a search for freedom and justice;
- a night dedicated to Hip Hop communities around the world, with a screening of Rampage by George Gittoes – who will also be offering an exclusive Q&A;
- Forgotten Chords by Kurdish filmmaker Soran Mardookhi, which allows audiences to see the strength and magic of music.
In Place of War, lead by Ruth Daniel, has worked for ten years, with the support of music industry figures, to bring opportunities through music, art, theatre and dance to sites of conflict, war and social upheaval.
