Tutors required for Manchester Access Programme Summer School

26 May 2016

Please register your interest by 10am on Monday, 6 June

This year we will run a Year 13 MAP Summer School for approximately 120 students who are currently holding a conditional firm offer with the University and who meet the essential MAP targeting criteria.

These students will have the opportunity to earn 20 UCAS points towards their offer at Manchester and to be awarded the £1000 a year MAP scholarship should they complete the Summer School.

An integral part of the Summer School will be the completion of a 1000 word Academic Assignment which students will complete

We require Academic Tutors to oversee the production of their Academic Assignment. We do not know as yet exactly how this will break down in terms of subjects, so as this stage we just looking for registrations of interest from tutors who are interested in being involved and who are available on the required dates. I am aware that some of you may have tutored this scheme last year, but below is some further information about what is involved.

What does being an Academic Tutor for the Y13 schemes involve?

  • First Meeting - Monday, 4 July (meetings will take place between 2pm – 4pm)
You will have a meeting with your student(s) and agree an assignment title and targets with them -the meeting will last 20 minutes.
  • Feedback on a draft assignment
Students will submit a draft assignment and tutors will be required to provide feedback on the draft and comment on how far the student has gone in meeting the targets that were set at the first tutorial.
  • Second Meeting – Wednesday, 13 July (meetings will take place between 11am – 2pm)
Written feedback will be provided as well as verbal feedback at  a second face to face meeting.
  • Final Assessment - Monday, 1 August 2015 (10am)
Tutors will be required to assess and grade the final assignment for each of their students by the 1 August deadline.

How many students can I tutor?

We envisage that each Academic Tutor will tutor one to five students. Allocation of students to a tutor is assigned will depend very much on the subject interests of the students.

If you  are interested in tutoring some students on, please do the following:

  1. Have a look at the dates table document attached to this email to see if you would be available to do so.
  2. If you think you may be available, please complete this Registration of Interest Survey by no later than Monday, 6 June.

The deadline to register your interest is Monday, 6 June at 10am.

Payment

Payment will be £50 for each student that you tutor.

Training

In order to fulfil this role tutors will need to attend a briefing session to receive further information about the schemes and how they will work. Briefing sessions will run on the following dates, therefore you would need to be available for one of the following sessions:

  • 14 June (3pm – 4pm) in Simon Building, Lecture Room 4A
  • 15 June (12pm - 1pm) University Place, Room 6.211
  • 16 June (1pm – 2pm) University Place, Room 6.211

The team hopes to be in a position to confirm whether you have been assigned any students to tutor by Friday, 10 June, as this will be dependent upon the subject interests of the participants.
