Beware of fake emails asking you for information or money

27 Apr 2016

Stay safe from the latest virus and phishing attacks.

Phishing scam

As with any email system, hoax messages occasionally manage to get past our junk mail filters.

Recent examples have included messages about invoice queries and grants for students.

While these websites get blocked from the University network when we discover them, it is incredibly important to be vigilant of:

  • Any emails from people or organisations that do not appear to be completely genuine, or contain attachments that you do not trust or know the origin of. Delete any suspicious emails.
  • Emails which purport to be from the University of Manchester, but contain unusual or unexpected content.

How can I check where something is from?

You can check a link by hovering over it – the resulting address should be displayed for you either directly on screen as a ‘hover tip’, or in the bottom left corner of your web browser.

If you see or receive links to any suspicious sites/attachments, do not visit or open them.

How can I help?

If you receive a suspicious email:

Note: Forwarding the email as an attachment gives us more information. Using Outlook, select the message (do not click the link!), click "More" in the title bar, then "Forward as attachment" and send to the phishing@listserv.manchester.ac.uk. The quicker this message gets sent, the quicker we can block malicious sites and/or senders from the University network.

I clicked on this link in this email – what should I do?

If you have entered your details any websites, change your password immediately through the IT Account Manager. If you entered any bank details, you will need to contact your bank straight away.

If you clicked the “invoice” email as shown above, telephone the IT Support Centre on 0161 306 5544 immediately.
