Aiming to make 100+ Dementia Friends in one session
06 Apr 2016
Dementia Friends session on 18 May during Dementia Awareness Week (15-21 May 2016) offers an important opportunity for us to increase understanding of dementia
Becoming a Dementia Friend is not about befriending someone with dementia. People who attend the sessions are asked to take just one small action, whether that's telling someone on social media they attended the course, wearing the pin they receive on the day, or being more patient in the community.
The session on 18 May will last approximately 45-60 minutes. Dementia Friends Champion Michelle Kipling will provide information that will enable participants:
- to understand the five key messages the Alzheimer's Society wish to get across to the nation;
- to have a greater understanding of how dementia affects someone living with it so that they can support them more effectively.
Put simply, being a Dementia Friend is understanding a bit more about dementia, and the little ways you can help.
The target of the Alzheimer's Society is to create four million Friends by March 2020.
Michelle, who works in the Alliance Manchester Business School, has been a Dementia Friends Champion since October 2014 and has created 542 friends. For Dementia Awareness Week, Michelle hopes to organise her largest group to date and fill G6 in Alliance MBS West Building which holds 200! No pressure! She hopes to see you there.
