Works to Burlington Street and the Main Quad

03 Mar 2016

The Directorate of Estates and Facilties has detailed disruption on Burlington Street and the Main Quad due to essential works being carried out over the next few weeks

Burlington Street

Excavation works will begin at Burlington Street on Monday, 7 March and continue until mid-May.

The University is upgrading the infrastructure which provides our heating, hot water and power and, while this is ongoing, to ensure we have alternative methods of providing power and heating to the buildings to the east of Oxford Road, we need to extend the current steam network from the west side to the east side of the road.

The best and most cost effective route is from the Rear Quadrangle Plant Room, up Burlington Street and across Oxford Road within an existing tunnel to the Simon Building. This scheme will also prepare our infrastructure for the development Combined, Heat and Power (CHP) which will allow the University to produce its own energy whilst reducing our carbon emissions and saving money.

During this work, the existing access/exit junction with Oxford Road will be reduced to a one-way system on Burlington Street with single barrier operation. Operation of the barrier will be managed during working hours and evening and weekend events to ensure traffic movement flows safely. Temporary pedestrian and speed restriction signage will be in place around the site works to direct staff and students whilst the works are underway. A team from Estates is working closely with building occupants and users to minimize any disruption and necessary updates will be provided throughout the course of the works.

This project is hugely important to the University’s ambitious Estate plans but we do understand the disruption to colleagues this work causes. Therefore, we really appreciate your support and patience whilst we complete this important project.

Manchester Museum, Quad Elevation

Groundworks have begun and investigations are being carried out in the Main Quad to determine work needed to repair a hole at the foundations of the Museum’s quad elevation. Heavy plant will be needed to undertake remedial works resulting in a large area of the Quad being closed.

In April, large deliveries will be arriving on site when the expected underground concrete works are likely to begin. Pedestrian barriers and parking restrictions are currently in place in the Main Quad and further updates, including information related to parking restrictions, will be sent out as appropriate throughout the work.

Completion is due in July.

Unfortunately it was not possible for these works to be carried out in the summer as the time between Graduation and Welcome Week is too tight to complete them.
