Debate: Should The University of Manchester divest from fossil fuels?

JustFest Fringe event on Thursday, 3 March (5pm) in Roscoe Building, Theatre B
This year, the University will be holding JustFest for the second time. This is a series of events in the Ethical Grand Challenges programme, aimed at giving undergraduate students the opportunity to explore issues encompassing sustainability, social justice and workplace ethics. Many of the activities and events will be of interest of, and are open to, members of staff.
Alongside the main programme of events on Wednesday, 9 March, a series of fringe events is also taking place this week. One of these is a debate on the subject of fossil fuel divestment, which has been a topic of growing interest among universities and large businesses over the last few years.
The debate will feature the following speakers:
- Professor Kevin Anderson
- Professor Jonathon Redfern
- Dr Peter Backus
- Dr Carl Death
This event is jointly hosted by the University of Manchester Students' Union, Manchester Debating Union, the Society of Petroleum Engineers and Fossil Free University of Manchester.

Separately, the University’s Fossil Fuel Investments Review Group is currently meeting monthly and will soon be sending out a detailed staff consultation on the issue. The results of this will be feeding into recommendations to go to the Board of Governors who will make a decision about divestment.
