SEED Annual Social Responsibility Lecture: 'Just Sustainabilities'
01 Mar 2016
On 8 March with Professor Julian Agyeman
SEED are delighted to welcome Professor Julian Agyeman, Tufts University, Massachusetts, to deliver the 2016 Social Responsibility School of Environment, Education and Development Annual Lecture, entitled 'Just Sustainabilities: Re-imagining e/quality, Living Within Limits'. The event is kindly co-sponsored by the Centre for Urban Resilience and Energy and cities@Manchester and is a JustFest Fringe event. You are very welcome to join us.
Julian will outline the concept of ‘just sustainabilities’. He will argue that integrating social needs and welfare, offers us a more ‘just,’ rounded, and equity-focused definition of sustainability and sustainable development, while not negating the very real environmental threats we face. He will define it as ‘the need to ensure a better quality of life for all, now and into the future, in a just and equitable manner, whilst living within the limits of supporting ecosystems.’ He will then look at examples of just sustainabilities focusing on ideas about 'fair shares' resource distribution globally; planning for intercultural cities; achieving wellbeing and happiness; the potential in the new sharing economy and finally the concept of 'spatial justice.’
There will be a welcome drinks reception at 4.30 pm, Julian's talk will start at 5pm. Please contact us with any details of accessibility support. Everybody from across and beyond the University of Manchester is welcome to join us, please share this invitation widely.
