Swap clothes at the Rutherford Swish

What is 'Swish?'
- Dictionary definition: To rustle, as silk
- Our definition: To rustle clothes from friends
Did you know that every 10 minutes we send 7 tonnes of clothes to landfill in the UK?
We want to reduce this, as well as help you all get a new wardrobe!
‘Swishing’ is shopping without the usual financial and sustainability hangovers.
Following on from the success of previous events the seasonal Rutherford ‘Swish’ (Clothes Swap) is swapping venue this season to the Barnes Wallis Hub on North Campus as part of the Big Green Gathering Sustainability Festival.
For all of you who are spring cleaning and getting ready to ditch some of your warmer clothes, making space for new spring / summer fashions - don’t throw your clothes away; save them for the 8th March and “swish” them for other pre-loved items!
Admission is free (but donations gratefully received), items are free if you swap something and £1 each if you do not. The proceeds will be shared between the Wood Street Mission and Lifeshare homeless charity.
How does it work?
You bring clean, presentable clothes that are lurking unloved in your wardrobe, your partner’s or children’s wardrobe and drawers, and others fall in love with them giving them a good home.
You might bring one sweater and take two pairs of jeans, or hang a party frock on the ‘Swishing Rail’ and take a pair of stilettos and feather boa – it’s your choice!
Any leftover items of clothing will be donated to the Wood Street Mission/Lifeshare and for this event also to the MRI for homeless patients so they don’t have to leave in dirty clothes.
Last time we raised £105 for charity, our biggest amount yet, as well as donating five bags of clothes to the charities.
Please feel free to also bring in items to be donated straight to charity: they are always in need of good quality children's and young adult clothing, baby equipment, bedding and toiletries.
Whilst you’re on North Campus, please also feel free to pop into the Sustainable Procurement Fair where University suppliers will be showing off their sustainable products in the Entrance Hall of Sackville Street Building.
