Find out how we’re working to help you stay safe
04 Feb 2016
On Tuesday 9 February, we're planning to make additional improvements to help our staff and students stay safe online.
As part of the University’s Cyber security programme, we plan to make a few changes to our network to further protect you from the cyber threats people face every day. Did you know that today we detect around 22,000 potentially dangerous connections to the University network, per hour? As a result of these planned changes, you may see some more warning messages if you're downloading certain kinds of file.
These changes will affect any device connected to the University’s wired network, wireless service, Hornet and VPN.
How this affects us
If you try to download a windows executable file (ending in .exe), you will receive an additional warning, advising you to ensure the file is legitimate.
We'll also be blocking more network traffic which contains malicious software, and ensuring that known bad websites are blocked from our network.
What to do if a site has been incorrectly blocked
If you've been blocked from accessing a website which you believe is not malicious, you should contact our IT Support Centre and they'll arrange for our IT security team to investigate.
