Diana Lopszyc to perform Kevin Malone's ‘Unsung Herstories’ in the Drawing Room of Elizabeth Gaskell’s House
Professor Diana Lopszyc will be performing a new feminist piano piece ‘Unsung Herstories’ in the Drawing Room of Elizabeth Gaskell’s House.
The piece, which focuses on Emmeline Pankhurst, Ada Lovelace, Julia Pastrana, Delia Derbyshire, and the first woman, Lilith, was written by the University's senior lecturer in Music, Dr Kevin Malone.
Professor Lopszyc will also be playing music by her sister Professor Eva Lopszyc, the sweeping, powerful ‘Victoria de Samotracia’ as well as Igor Shcherbakov's ‘LiebesTod (Diptych)’, and music by Wagner.
The current Drawing Room has a very fine late 19th century Broadwood piano, on loan to the house and there are regular piano and chamber music recitals. The music programme for 2016 includes chamber concerts and an evening of Victorian song and operetta.
Music has always been an important part of the life of the house – Elizabeth played the piano and her daughters were taught piano, in the house, by family friend Charles Halle, who founded the Halle Orchestra. After the Gaskells, the house was occupied by the Harper family and Constance Harper played the harp with the Halle Orchestra.
