Manchester city centre travel update
01 Feb 2016
Roadworks on Portland Street and John Dalton Street
There are roadworks at two major locations in Manchester city centre, which may affect travel plans.
Portland Street bus priority works
Piccadilly Gardens’ bus services return to bus stops on Parker Street on Monday 1 February, with the completion of the first phase of work to change the road layout on Portland Street – giving priority to buses, pedestrians and cyclists.
A final five-week phase of work on Portland Street will begin which, once complete, will mean a major section of the city centre bus priority scheme is finished in early March.
Work will take place between Aytoun Street and Newton Street, meaning this section of Portland Street will be closed to through traffic.
Metrolink Second City Crossing works
Also from Monday 1 February, John Dalton Street will be closed to through traffic at the junction to Princess Street for four weeks in preparation for laying Metrolink Second City Crossing (2CC) tram tracks along Princess Street, close to Manchester Town Hall, in the coming months.
A signed diversion route will be in place. Access to Princess Street will be maintained via Albert Square and pedestrian access will be maintained at all times. Some bus services will take different routes.
The works are part of a once-in-a-generation coordinated programme of investment to futureproof the city’s transport infrastructure for years to come and will mean some changes to city centre routes for road users.
