Run the Manchester Marathon – and raise funds for Deaf Education in the developing world
UK-based deaf education charity, Sound Seekers, is asking runners from across the University to take part in the Manchester Marathon as members of their running team.
The charity is dedicated to helping deaf children and adults in the poorest communities of the developing world, working in partnership with major hospitals, health service providers, and schools to establish audiology and education services. They are currently involved in projects across Cameroon, The Gambia, Malawi, Sierra Leone and Zambia.
Sound Seekers have been working with the Faculty’s Deaf Education and Audiology teams and has made a significant contribution to a new University of Manchester MOOC on deafness in low and middle income countries, due to be launched in the coming months.
Lecturer in Deaf Education, Helen Chilton said: “In many places in Africa children are born with no hearing screening, limited hearing health provision and no access to hearing aids. This is often coupled with stigma and a lack of awareness which means children who are deaf can be limited in their access to education and experience significant exclusion.
“The work of Sound Seekers is fantastic but they are dependent on fundraising events such as the marathon to keep them going, it would be really helpful if anyone planning on running the Manchester Marathon would volunteer to run as part of their team.”
Sound Seekers have already sponsored the four Malawian audiologists to train here in Manchester on the MSc in Audiology in the School of Psychological Sciences, helping them become the first Malawian audiologists in a country of more than 15 million people.
