MathsBombe is a new online competition aimed at students in Years 12 & 13 and below (England and Scotland), S5 & S6 and below (Scotland) and Year 13 & 14 and below (Northern Ireland). Every fortnight (starting from 13 January and running until 11 March 2016) two new mathematical puzzles will be released. There are prizes for the first team to submit the correct answer for each puzzle, as well as “spot-prizes” for three teams drawn at random from all the correct solutions every fortnight.
The puzzles will be quirky, fun and cover the full spectrum of Mathematics; they will not be directly related to the A-Level syllabus and will be unlike problems in, say, the UKMT. Instead students will need to use their problem-solving skills and be able to ‘think outside the box’ - valuable skills for students going on to study STEM subjects at university.
Run by the School of Mathematics, participants will be competing against other students from across the UK, so it’s a great way to build team-working skills and develop their ability to work under pressure. Competing in MathsBombe would look excellent on any UCAS personal statement or CV!
Registration is now open and the competition begins at 4pm on Wednesday, 13 January 2016!
