Residential Services staff help children in poverty celebrate Christmas
Colleagues from Residential Services have been taking part in the Key 103 Mission Christmas, in which the local radio station aims to raise cash and collect as many gifts as possible to give to children living in poverty.
There are 152,000 children who live in poverty throughout Greater Manchester – almost 1 in 3.
In 2014, Mission Christmas distributed £1,640,000 of gifts and money to help 68,683 children across the county celebrate Christmas. The aim this year is to distribute more gifts to even more children.
Campus Liaison Coordinator Davina Holme, who arranged for staff in Residences to volunteer at the Key 103 Mission Christmas Toy Distribution Warehouse, said: “This is a fantastic initiative and we are so proud to be taking part in order to make Christmas morning special for a child living in poverty.
“The team from the University volunteered in their own time and worked so hard at the warehouse sorting presents and helping with the distribution lists”.
Sarah Pete, Community Engagement Manager for Key 103 Mission Christmas, said: “With the number of children across Greater Manchester needing our help more than ever, it is great to have had staff from the University of Manchester supporting us and taking part.
“We would like to thank them and all the volunteers for their enthusiasm, commitment and their time.”
