Update 4 - Monday 7 December at 13:25
Janet, the UK organisation which provides computer network access to UK education and research services, has experienced a Denial of Service (DoS) attack, resulting in a degradation of network traffic.
Further and higher education organisations in the UK – including The University of Manchester - are connected to the Janet network.
Denial of Service attacks are malicious attempts to interrupt or degrade an internet-connected service, often by flooding that service with large amounts of traffic. By flooding the service with excessive traffic, an attacker is attempting to exceed the capacity of the service, which causes the service to run slowly or become unavailable.
Engineers from Jisc are implementing blocks to prevent connections from the source of the attack, while taking great care to ensure that legitimate network traffic is still accessible.
We are being provided with more information by senior management at Jisc, and will issue updates when relevant here on StaffNet news and our social media channels, particularly Twitter @UoM_ITS.
The occurrence of these incidents highlight the fact that issues with cyber security are a very real threat, and this further emphasises the importance of the University’s extensive cyber security programme. More about the cyber security programme can be found on the IT Services website:
Update 3 - Monday 7 December at 12:46
Jisc, the provider of the Janet network used by us and other HE institutions, are still investigating the issues occurring on their network.
Update 2 - Monday 7 December 2015 at 10:10

Update 1 - Monday 7 December 2015 at 09:02

Original message - Friday 4 December 2015 at 16:09
Similar to the outages on Tuesday 1 December, a technical issue on the Janet network is affecting multiple institutions around the UK, which includes The University of Manchester.
This may result in slow, intermittent or no access to external websites or services.
Jisc will be posting technical updates on their Twitter account and Service Status page.
