Open Lecture on Manchester Town Hall Murals
04 Dec 2015
On Wednesday, 9 December (5.30 – 6.30pm) in the Main Lecture Theatre, Samuel Alexander Building
Dr Colin Trodd from Art History & Visual Studies will hold a lecture on “Ford Madox Brown: Picturing Manchester, Making History Public”.
The talk is part of the Meet the Researchers lecture series, which is open to all.
By examining the extraordinary set of murals painted by Ford Madox Brown in the Great Hall, Manchester Town Hall (1878-1893), Dr Trodd’s talk will engage with the questions:
- How do artists go about representing the past?
- How do they select and depict historical events, and how do they understand, interpret and imagine historical processes?
- What is it, then, that makes art public?
