University no smoking policy – a reminder

Smokers asked to take care where they light up

No Smoking Policy

Now the weather is colder and wetter during the winter months, the University has a timely reminder of its no smoking policy.

Under the Health Act 2006, the University has a legal duty to ensure that the working environment is smoke-free.

All University work places and vehicles are designated as non-smoking and smokers are not permitted to smoke within five metres of the entrance to a building. This also includes the use of electronic cigarettes (or e-cigarettes).

Many buildings have signs reminding smokers of the exclusion zone. However smokers should also be sensitive to colleagues whose offices are close to, or whose windows overlook areas where they have a cigarette, in case others are affected by drifting smoke.

Smoking is one of the biggest causes of death and illness in the UK. Every year around 100,000 people die from smoking, with many more deaths caused by smoking-related illnesses, such as cancer, heart disease, stroke and respiratory diseases.

The University provides assistance to those wishing to stop smoking through Occupational Health Service and Counselling facilities.
