Wear a red ribbon on World AIDS Day
10 Nov 2015
Tuesday, 1 December is World AIDS Day – one of the eight official global public health campaigns marked by the World Health Organization
Between 1981 and 2012, AIDS has killed more than 36 million people worldwide, and an estimated 35.3 million people are living with HIV. It impacts on all communities and is not confined to particular groups. Three of the most impacted communities are LGBT (Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Trans), Disabled and BME (Black Minority Ethnic).
The University has undertaken a fundraising campaign, led by the E&D Office and LGBT Staff Network Group, every year since 2010.
This year, three staff network groups are collaborating to raise more awareness and there are increased numbers of collection boxes selling red ribbons on campus.
Red ribbons now on sale
You can buy your red ribbons from:
- all FoodOnCampus outlets;
- many building receptions;
- outdoor sales points on campus run by students from the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Social Work.
Bake sales on Friday, 1 December
Come along and buy some cake baked by volunteers from the three network groups and raise much needed funds for HIV and AIDS charities:
- Samuel Alexander Building foyer (10am-1pm)
- Arthur Lewis Building (10am onwards)
- Jean McFarlane Building (throughout the day)
All funds raised will go to our three nominated charities: National AIDS Trust (NAT), LGBT Foundation, and George House Trust.

The day also coincides with #GivingTuesday which the University is supporting for the second year running – so another reason to support this, and other, worthy causes.
