The University has welcomed its incoming Postgraduate Scholarship Scheme award holders with an evening reception in Christie’s Bistro, hosted by Professor Clive Agnew, Vice President for Teaching, Learning and Students.

The University has awarded 145 scholarships of £10,000 to Home students beginning full-time master’s study in 2015.

The scholarships were jointly funded by the University and HEFCE, as part of a national scheme to support Home recruitment pending the introduction of postgraduate loans, and were available only to those graduating under the new undergraduate fee regime and who met one or more widening participation criteria.

Around half of the cohort were University of Manchester undergraduates.

This year’s Scheme built on a successful pilot Scholarship Scheme run in Manchester and other partner institutions in 2014 and is part of the University’s wider commitment to support for postgraduate study.

Over the coming year, the University is supporting a project to look at the impact of master’s study on student progression and employability, and ways in which students can be supported to progress into PGR study (over half of our PGR new entrants have a master’s qualification on entry).  It is hoped that the Scholars will take an active part in this research.
