Disconnection of computers using Windows XP or Server 2003
02 Oct 2015
Equipment found on the University network using out-of-support operating systems is being blocked
What is happening?
On Thursday 15 October 2015, all services running Windows Server 2003 or Windows XP will be disconnected and no longer accessible on the University network. This includes services using IP addresses which start with ‘10.99’.
Why is this happening?
As previously mentioned, Microsoft ended support for Windows Server 2003 on 14 July 2015 and Windows XP on 8 April 2014. This means that no further updates are being released for these operating systems, which causes a potential security risk if they are still being used.
I previously agreed to restrict my service to the internal network only. Does this affect me?
Yes. Services running the above operating systems will be disconnected from both the internal and external network.
I use Windows XP, and was granted an exception prior to June 2015, will I still be able to use my equipment on the University network?
No. This exercise replaces all previous similar activities.
What do I need to do?
If you still have any equipment or services using Windows Server 2003 or Windows XP, you should contact the IT Support Centre immediately.
