Veronique still raising charity funds – at the double
University colleague Veronique Rizzuto is marking ten years of her charity to help people in Ethiopia, Building Hope, with two sponsored walks – and she’s asking others to take part or even organise their own.
Equality and Diversity administrator Veronique set up the charity, which helps to improve the lives of communities in Ethiopia by providing housing and sanitation, educational opportunities and support income generating projects, in 2005.
She had been working as a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity and was so struck by the abject poverty, misery and despair of young people in particular that she was determined to help build a better life for some of the people she met.
The charity’s two main projects were the construction and furnishing of a library and latrines at Karagutu School and the building of homes for some of the leprosy families living in Dessie.
Veronique has just returned from Ethiopia where she revisited Tita Elementary School and discussed in detail the construction of a block of toilets for girls and boys, as the existing toilets were health hazard. The school will contribute 50% of the construction and the project will start next month.
To mark the ten-year milestone, Building Hope has organised two sponsored walks in Parbold, Lancashire, on Sunday, 20 September and in Wilmslow (date to be confirmed).
