Performance in 2015 Shanghai Jiao Tong

The University has been ranked joint 41st in the 2015 Shanghai Jiao Tong Academic Ranking of World Universities

Manchester remains the fifth highest ranked UK institution, behind Cambridge (5), Oxford (9), UCL (18) and Imperial (22). Four other UK universities make the top 100: Edinburgh (47), Kings (55), Bristol (66) and Warwick (92).

US universities continue to dominate the top rankings with Harvard, Stanford and MIT remaining the top three universities in this ranking.  

Manchester’s 41st position – level with University of Paris-Sud – represents a fall of three places on last year’s ranking. The institutions that have risen above us are Copenhagen (up from =39 to 35), Texas at Austin (up from =39 to 37) and California Santa Barbara (up from 41 to 38).

The Shanghai Jiao Tong (SJT) index is the league table traditionally used by the University to benchmark its research quality against international competitors as it is recognised as an objective ranking. However, going forward the University will start to use three major international rankings to provide a greater understanding of our research strengths and challenges.

Early analysis of the statistics used in the SJT rankings suggests that the University has fallen back slightly relative to others in the number of research papers published this year compared to last, including those in Nature and Science. The methodology used by the SJT also means the impact of the two Nobel Prizes awarded in 2010 diminishes over time.
