Heart of gold

10 Aug 2015

The University has received its second gold Cardiac Smart award from North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust (NWAS) and has also been shortlisted for the UK Heart Safe Awards 2015

Cardiac Smart Awards June 2015

The NWAS Cardiac Smart awards recognise those who have made outstanding efforts to save the life of a person suffering a cardiac arrest. This is the University's second gold Cardiac Smart Award, following its first award in June 2013.

At a celebration event on Friday, 5 June at Blackburn Rovers Football Club, the University's First Aid Coordinator, Janet Makin, joined other award winners plus individuals and organisations who have dedicated their time to raising awareness of heart health, basic life support and defibrillators.

Janet said “I was delighted to accept the University’s second Gold Cardiac Smart award from the NWAS NHS Trust. The award recognises the ongoing work that is being done to support the aims of the scheme, particularly in making as many people as possible aware of the Chain of Survival and providing Automated External Defibrillators for the community.

"The work done by Millie Loxton and Emma Richardson (from the University Volunteering Team) with the second year student nurses made a huge contribution towards the application. In the last academic year, the student nurse Heart Start instructors have trained over 250 young people from ages 8 to 25 in basic life support skills."

The University has also been shortlisted for the UK Heart Safe Awards 2015 in the Educational Establishment of the Year category.

The Heart Safe Awards are the UK’s first nationwide awards competition to celebrate organisations and employers who invest in creating Heart Safe environments as well as the acts of individuals who have saved lives while at work or leisure. The awards ceremony will take place on Friday, 9 October at The Midland Hotel, Manchester.

Janet added: "Being shortlisted for the Heart Safe Educational Establishment of the Year 2015 gives national recognition to the work and commitment of University staff and students, even if we’re not the winner."
