Football match raises funds for Arthritis Research UK

29 Jul 2015

The annual (Jane) Worthington Cup football match between the two Arthritis Research UK (ARUK) Centres of Excellence based at the University of Manchester took place earlier this month

The ARUK's Centre for Epidemiology and Centre for Genetics and Genomics, both part of the Centre for Musculoskeletal Research in the Faculty’s Institute of Inflammation and Repair, battled it out in a repeat of last year’s inaugural fixture. Alongside the game, a special match day charity cake sale was held throughout the day.

Genetics and Genomics United, hoping to avenge their defeat last year, got off to the perfect start by scoring the opening goal. However, they could not pull clear of Epidemiology Athletic and after a first half of ebbing and flowing football, the scores stood level at 5-5 at half-time.

Genetics and Genomics again took the lead in the second half, but they were soon pegged back and a late flurry of goals gave Epidemiology the win, with the final score 13-7.

Organiser of the event, Dr Jamie Sergeant, Lecturer in Medical Statistics in the Centre for Musculoskeletal Research said: “Thanks to everyone who supported the (Jane) Worthington Cup football match and match day cake sale. However you made your contribution, whether by playing, spectating, baking or just eating cake, it is very much appreciated.”

“Most importantly,” he added, “we raised a fantastic £239.69 for Arthritis Research UK!”
