Open days for staff and the public now booking
Staff are invited to an open morning on Thursday 18 June to see behind the scenes at the University’s new £28.5 miliion building for the Manchester Cancer Research Centre – a partnership between the University, Cancer Research UK and The Christie NHS Foundation Trust.
Featuring guided lab tours, a talk from Director of the Manchester Cancer Research Centre Professor Nic Jones and a viewing of a new video commissioned for the event, the tours are open to all University and Christie staff.
For those who can’t make the Thursday event, there is also a public open day on Saturday 20 June which is suitable for all ages. This event is packed full of interactive activities, including smartphone microscopes, giant 'hurricane tubes' and a pipetting challenge.
Visitors will be able to go behind the scenes in the laboratories, conduct their own experiments and learn about the pioneering research that's taking place here in Manchester. There will also be a programme of inspiring talks.
The Manchester Cancer Research Centre is a partnership between The University of Manchester, Cancer Research UK and The Christie NHS Foundation Trust and came into existence in 2006 to bring together top scientists and clinicians to drive forward progress in the understanding of cancer and help inform new treatments.
The new facility will provide outstanding opportunities and a vibrant environment for researchers, clinicians and external partners to work together towards the vision for a single-site 'bench to bedside' approach.
The new building will accommodate 150 researchers and approximately 100 other staff, including researchers from the CRUK Manchester Institute and The University of Manchester. Individual researchers will lead high quality research groups that focus on the MCRC’s strategic areas of priority.
Cancer is one of The University of Manchester’s research beacons - examples of pioneering discoveries, interdisciplinary collaboration and cross-sector partnerships that are tackling some of the biggest questions facing the planet. The opening of the new building is a major milestone in meeting this challenge.
