Joining up Research Information across the University

Current Research Information System (CRIS) to deliver significant benefits to researchers and staff who support research
Over the past decade, researchers have increasingly recognised the need to share research information effectively, and have experienced many and increasing demands to provide information about their research activities.
This has led to the development of a range of information system solutions to cope with these demands as they have arisen. However the diverse origin of these individual solutions has sometimes resulted in duplication of effort, inconsistent user experience and limits to the effective use of information.
To address this situation, a project is underway between Research and Business Engagement Support Services (RBESS), the Library and IT Services to implement a new Current Research Information System (CRIS) which will improve the way in which the University’s research information is managed, delivering significant benefits to researchers and staff who support research.
Following an evaluation process that involved staff from across the University, the Pure software was selected in December 2014 for implementation as the new CRIS.
Although this will create a more joined-up experience, a number of existing systems and processes that are used in research management will remain in use, including Oracle Financials for managing project finances, Je-S for submission of grant applications to Research Councils, HR systems for recruitment of project staff and Campus Solutions and eProg for recording student information.
Over 20 UK universities are currently using the Pure software and Manchester will become part of an active user group, helping to drive and shape future updates in functionality, and benefitting from the ability to adopt new standards in the research environment as they become established.
