How Manchester Graduate Internship helps our students – and how it can help you
Manchester Graduate Internship Programme (MGIP) has successfully placed more than 700 graduates in a variety of organisations and local businesses, 250 at the University, since it started in 2008. And it has proved a tremendous experience all round. In this new series, StaffNet takes a look at why – and how it can help you.
When Adam Lavery was taken on as an Assistant Information and Research Analyst, he was pleased to be given an important project – carrying out and monitoring the testing of the online system used to collect graduate destinations data.
Adam, 22, who graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Physics with Philosophy in July 2014, explains: “The testing project involved delegating responsibilities within the project as well as creating both technical and non-technical reports for colleagues and management.
“Whilst I have utilised and developed many skills throughout the internship, I am grateful to have engaged with this project in particular. In terms of personal development, it allowed me to confidently manage a project of great responsibility and one with far-reaching impact. In terms of skills, this experience required excellent organisation and time management to meet strict operational deadlines and standards.”
Adam, who worked for Information and Research Analyst Shermain James at the Careers Service, Directorate for the Student Experience, also supported and facilitated the bi-annual collection of employability data for the University, reporting progress to senior management, liaising with external business contacts and assisting the collection manager with a variety of projects over the collection timescale.
He adds: “It was great to have the opportunity to give something back to the university that gave me three great years as an undergraduate. After giving the experience my all, I hope this shows in the projects and long-lasting relationships I have developed whilst here.”
MGIP has also been a hit with colleagues hiring interns.
Hilary Garraway, PGT Manager, Manchester Business School, says: “I would highly recommend MGIP; the recruitment was taken out of our hands saving us time and we only received applications from candidates with relevant backgrounds and experience. Our interns are keen to learn and are happy to tackle all tasks given to them.”
