6500m of cables, 430 devices and 3000 nuts and bolts

We’re moving the Kilburn Building Data Centre to a new, secure, reliable and efficient offsite location.
The Data Centre in the Kilburn Building hosts many of our IT services, (including networking, file storage, Research IT services, web sites, email and others). It was designed for 1970s computing needs and is no longer suitable.
When will the equipment be moved?
The work is planned to take place on seven weekends between Friday 29 May and Sunday 2 August.
What is the impact?
Many of our services are dual site, meaning they can also run from equipment based in our second Data Centre in Reynolds House, so users of those services should be able to access them as normal. However, a small number of the services will have outages while they are being relocated.
Facts and figures
- 430 devices are being moved
- A grand total of 6,500m of new cabling has been used
- 4,500 fibre optic and copper data connections have been newly installed
- There are 4,000 new patch cables and power cables
- 3,000 nuts and bolts have been used to fix the equipment and infrastructure.
