Athena SWAN landmark win
23 Apr 2015
All our science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine Schools now carry the honour for recruitment, retention and progression of women
The School of Earth, Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences (SEAES) has won a Bronze in the Athena SWAN Awards, which recognise and celebrate good practice in recruiting, retaining and promoting women in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine (STEMM).
This means that all 15 of our STEMM Schools now carry the honour – five with Silver awards and 10 with Bronze.
The School of Psychological Sciences (SPS) has also won the prestigious Silver Award, having demonstrated that, since their Bronze Award in April 2013, they have embedded a real culture change across their School.
Good practice has resulted in the significant improvements in the progression and development opportunities for women at all career stages.
The University also successfully renewed its Bronze Award.
Dr Helen Ryder, University Charter Marks Coordinator, said: “Huge congratulations to the University, SPS and SEAES in the achievement of their awards.
“Since our first award in 2008, the Athena SWAN Charter has helped us to work towards an environment in which our female students and staff feel that the University does all it can to ensure equality of opportunity.”
The Athena SWAN Charter is owned by the Equality Challenge Unit. The awards recognise and celebrate good practice in recruiting, retaining and promoting women in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine (STEMM) in academia. From November 2015 the awards will be extended to include our non-STEMM Schools and also our technical and support staff.
