Understanding mental health

07 Apr 2015

Melanie Sharpe, Co-chair of the University's Disabled Staff Network, and Amy Rose, a Time to Change ambassador, are hosting an event to get people talking about mental health

The event will take place on Wednesday, 29 April from 4pm to 6pm in Room 6.207, University Place.

Part 1 (4pm - 5pm)

Amy Rose is a Time to Change ambassador. She has personal experience of PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder), depression and anxiety. She will talk about Time to Change, mental health stigma and her own experiences. This will be followed by at least one activity around mental health myths.

Part 2 (5pm - 6pm)

Melanie Sharpe is Co-chair of the University's Disabled Staff Network. She has personal experience of BPD (Borderline Personality Disorder), depression and anxiety. She will give an overview of BPD and will talk about her own diagnosis and experience. If time allows there will be another activity called "The Speaker, the Listener and the Voice". People suffering certain mental illnesses sometimes hear voices and of course only people who do truly know what this is like. However, with this activity we will take a look at what it might be like by doing a practical exercise!

Refreshments will be available during the event.
