The Whitworth – an Instagram hit
19 Mar 2015
Images of the gallery have made it into the top ten of worldwide instagram posts with more than half a million views
As part of the Whitworth’s opening campaign the Whitworth team thought it would be fun to invite some local instagrammers along to see the gallery just before it opened. Little did they know they would soon be battling it out with Kim Kardashian and Beyonce for the top spot in instagram’s “most liked posts” table.
Eventually the Whitworth images, posted by instagrammer, Tim Hatton (@the.hat), couldn’t quite reach the heights of those global stars but still made it in to the top ten worldwide instagram posts for the week reaching 668,842 views.
Also posting was Manchester photographer, Zuza Grubecka (@zuza_g), who said: “It’s great to see how the gallery’s been transformed into an even more exciting place for the public.”
Zuza mixes portrait photos with her documentation of daily life from Manchester, as well as her native Poland. “Manchester and its post-industrial architecture is a perfect background. There are a lot of secret passages and abandoned areas which make you feel like an explorer in your own city.” You can join Zuza and Tim and post your own images of the Whitworth using the #galleryinthepark hashtag.
Keeping with the photography theme the University gallery bucked a new trend from some London galleries of clamping down on photography, in particular the use of selfie sticks. The gallery are happy to encourage visitors to photograph and share their images and are on the look out for the next social media star!
