Dementia Friends Information Session
05 Mar 2015
Tuesday, 10 March at noon in Room 1.6, MBS West
Michelle Kipling from Manchester Business School is running a Dementia Friends Information Session for colleagues who are interested in the subject, or who would like to become a Dementia Friend like her.
Michelle explains: “The Alzheimer's Society reached its target of 1 million Friends in March 2015 and now has a new target of 4 million by 2020. I believe it would be great for the University to be part of that initiative.
“Following the Dementia Friends session I attended, I decided to become a Dementia Friends Champion – which means I can now run the information sessions myself. I am not a dementia expert and simply a volunteer who wishes to raise awareness within my networks and community.
“At this point it is worth clarifying what becoming a Dementia Friend means. It is not about befriending someone with Dementia. People that attend are asked to just take one small action, be that telling someone on social media they attended the course; wearing their pin they receive on the day; or being more patient in the community.”
The session lasts 45-60 minutes and will include information on the five key messages the Alzheimer's Society wish to get across to the nation, and also how to have a greater understanding of how dementia affects someone living with it to enable people to support them more effectively. Simply, being a Dementia Friend is understanding a bit more about dementia, and the little ways you can help.
