The University is supporting the Wonder Woman 2015 campaign which is celebrating British women in the run up to International Women’s Day on Sunday, 8 March
We are highlighting some inspirational women from the University including students, academic and non-academic staff and are celebrating what women achieve in their everyday lives however big and small.
Here are just a few of the University’s ‘Wonder Women’:
- Paralympic swimmer and triathlete Eleni Papadopoulos is a law student who is eyeing a place at the Rio Paralympics 2016 – she holds eight British records, four European records and a world record in the 200 metres butterfly in her swim category.
- Dr Jenny Myers is researching diabetes and hypertension in pregnancy and she runs a research clinic which provides clinical care for women with chronic and pregnancy-related hypertensive disease.
- Professor Melissa Denecke is the Co-Director of the Dalton Nuclear Institute and heads up Women in Nuclear in Europe. She plays a key part in providing internationally recognised research, higher learning and advisory services to help deliver the UK’s new nuclear R&D strategy and skills development programmes.
- Carole Goble is a senior computer scientist, who has been working in a male dominated area for the last 35 years.
- Professor Diane Coyle is one of the UK’s leading economists and is the Vice Chair of the BBC Trust and a former Economics Editor of The Independent newspaper.
- Kiddist Forsythe is a law student who is about to take her first steps as a trainee lawyer with a major City law firm. She is also fighting to find out the truth about her father's murder 20 years ago.
- Teresa Sutcliffe is so passionate about her work as a member of the University’s Library staff and the assistance she provides students (particularly those from overseas) that she’s opted to continue working beyond the age of retirement.
