Greater Manchester Academic Health Science Network (GM AHSN) has welcomed the NHS devolution deal for the region, announced this week.

GM AHSN is one of 15 Academic Health Science Networks in the UK, set up to deliver a step change in health outcomes and in how health expertise and spend can generate wealth for the communities they serve.

Greater Manchester AHSN is a collaborative network of local NHS organisations, higher education institutes and industry. It is a membership organisation bringing together 30 NHS providers and commissioners and four universities including The University of Manchester.

It aims to support Greater Manchester’s strategy for growth through enabling £1bn of wealth creation over five years, helping to create a healthier population with significantly increased wellbeing and a better educated and trained workforce.

Mike Burrows, Managing Director of GM AHSN, said: “The devolution deal presents an exciting opportunity for the work of the Academic Health Science Network.

“The cohesiveness of the Greater Manchester health and social care partners creates a unique environment to undertake healthcare research but also for industry partners who are looking for a one stop approach to working with the NHS at scale.

“Adoption and spread of innovation will be made easier and will be a key part of how the devolved arrangements can make the deal work in the best interests of Greater Manchester residents and their health and social care.”
