This course is aimed at staff or managers/team leaders within the university who wish to consider the process of problem solving and decision-making and acquire a number of basic tools and techniques that might be of use.
It is not suitable for people who are confident and/or experienced in problem solving and decision-making or those who have previously attended the ILM level 3 award or certificate in management.
Course overview
Everyone uses various approaches for problem solving and decision-making. This course provides an opportunity to review and apply a number of widely used basic problem solving and decision-making techniques and ideas including:
• Techniques for generating ideas about, and an over view of, issues e.g. mind-maps
• Techniques for organising information e.g. task lists
• Techniques for creative thinking/building a richer picture of an issue e.g. six thinking hats
• Techniques to aid decision-making, e.g. decision matrix
• The process of problem-solving and decision-making
• Context and conditions for problem solving and decision-making
Course objectives
By the end of the course participants will be able to:
• Identify and appropriately use two or more problem solving and decision-making techniques
• Explain and take account of contextual factors when undertaking problem solving and decision-making
• Develop a plan to improve their work related problem solving and decision-making
